Information about tutoring

Our approach to tutoring

Tutors and students commit to a minimum of six weeks of weekly tutoring, in school, during a non-core-class period. Directly addressing gaps in basic math skills in this way contributes to higher graduation rates and employability, as well as stronger life and career skills. Tutors and students are matched for day, time, location and fit.

Math is a Muscle tutors serve students in the Cincinnati Public School district at Shroder High School and Shroder Middle School, where we have operated since 2013. We work with 25-40 students per year, thanks to the efforts of 15-20 tutors.

Community volunteers deliver tutoring to students once we interview them, they pass a background check, and we train them in the curriculum and methodology.  Experienced tutors provide ongoing support and instruction to new tutors. We ask new tutors to participate in the program for a minimum of one semester, though virtually all stay with the program for a full school year or longer. In fact, many of our tutors have been with the program for more than five years.

Since we began operations, we have trained more than 50 tutors and provided one-on-one tutoring for more than 200 students.

Our curriculum

Students need mastery of fundamental arithmetic skills to restore their confidence in their ability to do math. These skills also allow them to focus on the problem solving required for success in algebra. Following the program in our workbook provides students with the basic arithmetic skills and confidence they need to be successful in grade-level math.
